Panama City Beach vs. Deepwater Horizon

by Wendell Browne on May 4, 2010

A Bay County meeting of the local officials Monday morning states that Panama City Beach is not currently in the cone of uncertainty for the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.

The Department of Environmental Protection mentioned that Bay County might see tar balls and possible oil sheen.

Of course, at this point, it’s anyone’s guess as to where the oil spill may go, especially with the weather and high winds.

Bay County officials have been preparing for several days and have a response plan in place. There are numerous issues involved with potential impact upon Bay County including but not limited to the economic factor of tourism on Panama City Beach and the potential of contamination to Deer Point Reservoir, which is the county’s source of potable water.

The Trajectory forecast from NOAA can be found here.

For now, we will have to wait and see how this plays out.
